K-pop Idol Stories: A Dream Game for Fans, But What's the Reality?
K-pop is a global phenomenon, and with its recent surge in popularity, it's no wonder that the industry is being reimagined in interactive media. K-pop Idol Stories, a game that promises to deliver the ultimate PS5 fantasy for fans, is a unique take on the K-pop experience. But is it a realistic portrayal of the industry, or just a fun, lighthearted game?
A Game of Dreams and Decisions
The game's premise is simple: players manage a group of K-pop idols through their journey to debut. But it's not just about scouting talent and managing schedules. The game delves into the complex world of K-pop, where decisions are crucial and can make or break a group's success.
"The entire game builds toward debut because that's the moment when all of your decisions are finally judged," says the Wisageni Studio team. "A typical gameplay session is a constant balancing act between scouting talent, managing schedules, improving skills, and making tough business decisions."
The game's focus on the journey to debut is a refreshing take on the industry, as it highlights the challenges and sacrifices that come with becoming a K-pop idol. The team emphasizes that the game is not just about the end goal, but the process and the impact it has on the idols and the player's ambitions.
A Unique Art Style and Soundtrack
K-pop Idol Stories features an art style inspired by Korean manhwa titles, such as True Beauty, which adds a unique visual appeal to the game. The team's goal was to create a more mature and authentic representation of K-pop idols, rather than the typical anime-style characters.
The game's soundtrack is also a highlight, with original tracks created by Shorelle and Honi Studios, who have extensive experience in the K-pop industry. The game features five original tracks, each showcasing a distinct vibe and flavor, adding to the immersive experience.
A Focus on Girl Groups
One interesting aspect of the game is its focus on girl groups. The team decided to concentrate on girl groups first, allowing for a deeper exploration of their personalities, stories, and group concepts. This approach also allows for more creative freedom in terms of costume design and group dynamics.
"We actually see that as a creative constraint rather than a limitation," says the team. "By focusing on girl groups first, we could go much deeper into the personalities, stories, group concept and costume creativity instead of spreading ourselves too thin."
A Lighthearted Experience, But Not Without Its Shadows
While K-pop Idol Stories is intended to be a lighthearted experience, the team acknowledges the darker side of the industry. They wanted to avoid pretending that the industry is perfect and instead focused on the excitement and hope of discovering K-pop for the first time.
"One thing we wanted to avoid was pretending the industry is perfect," says the team. "At the end of the day, this is still a game, so we chose to focus on a more lighthearted experience, a love letter to the excitement, hope, and wonder of discovering K-pop for the first time."
An International Perspective
As an Indonesian studio, Wisageni Studio brings a unique perspective to the game. They approach K-pop from the viewpoint of global fans, offering an insider's perspective on the industry while also asking the questions that insiders might overlook.
"Being outside Korea is actually one of our biggest advantages," says the team. "We approach K-pop from the same perspective as many global fans. Close enough to understand why people around the world fell in love with it, but distant enough to ask questions that insiders might take for granted."
K-pop Idol Stories: Road to Debut is set to release on July 16th, available both physically and digitally on the PS5. It promises to be a captivating experience for fans, offering a glimpse into the world of K-pop without sacrificing the fun and interactivity of a video game.
